Together we are changing the conversation.

What is Knowledge Transfer and Exchange?

Knowledge transfer and exchange is about accessing existing knowledge (from research, practice and lived experience) and bringing it together so that it can be built upon to create new understanding and ways of doing things. It’s about using knowledge in ways that it can be put into practice to make positive change.

Over the years, other networks and organizations have successfully used the brainXchange’s approach to improve their practices, partnerships and communication with their own membership.

Knowledge Translation Models

This Knowledge Transfer Cycle (Sullivan et al., 2004) illustrates how the brainXchange is addressing the five non-linear phases of knowledge transfer.
  • Knowledge Generation – building reciprocal linkages between the researcher, educator, policy, people with lived experience and care partners to create new understanding and knowledge
  • Knowledge Translation – working in partnership with Communities of Practice (CoP) members and relevant stakeholders to find opportunities to develop practical, evidence-based resources to facilitate the transfer of knowledge into practice
  • Knowledge Awareness and Access – using technology to provide awareness of and access to relevant resources and experience-based knowledge
  • Knowledge Use – facilitating the use of knowledge (transfer of knowledge into practice) by providing knowledge exchange support and resources
  • Knowledge Accumulation and Retrieval – accumulating ‘stories’ from members in order to build on successes and facilitate the development of new partnerships

We also draw upon the Knowledge to Practice Process Framework (Ryan, D. et al., 2013) which describes multifaceted knowledge to practice work in four interconnected stages (see graphic below). It is a cycle rather than a one-time event.
