Event Date: Sep 11, 2023
A 7.5 hour-long Positive Approach® to Care (PAC) interactive workshop based on the work by Teepa Snow focusing on Typical Aging Versus Non-typical Aging, Positive Physical Approach and GEMS: Progressive Patterns.
The
purpose of this workshop is: to apply evidence-based information to the care of adults who have dementia in order to improve care outcomes. The intended audience includes health care staff who work or come in contact with adults who have dementia or other cognitive impairments.
Objectives:
Workshop A: Compare and contrast Typical Aging versus Non-typical Aging. Participants will learn about the five sensory input processing systems of the brain and the major differences between the protective and discriminating sensations in each. Participants will take away an understanding of the impact of the changing sensory awareness and how its processed in the brain as dementia progresses.
Workshop B: Positive Physical Approach (PPA) builds upon skills learned in Workshop A with an emphasis on understanding vision changes and space awareness. Review of Hand-Under-Hand technique and learn how to apply it seven possible applications, uncluding task initiation and pain assessment.
Workshop C: Seeing GEMS As More than Just Loss: Progressive Patterns. This workshops offers an overview of Teepa Snow's dementia classification model. The GEMS model compares different states of being and ability to the characteristics of precious jewels. This dignified metaphor defines normal aging as well as the many appearances, behavioral changes, skill sets and needs of those living with the effects of neurocognitive failure (dementia) or other brain changes.
NOTE: This workshop day may be video-recorded for training purposes.
