Intimacy and Sexuality: My Rights, Your Responsibility

The debate surrounding sexuality and dementia is largely paternalistic and concentrates primarily on issues of safety and protection.  This discourse is reinforced informally by the social perpetuation of stereotypes and stigma.  Consequently, people with dementia are often denied the possibility of exploring and enjoying their sexuality.

Under the United Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, everyone has the right to enjoy intimacy and sexuality. 

Sexuality and intimacy is a human need according to the Seven Domains of Well-Being is a foundation for personal joy.
