Please join us for event 2 of our 3-part Healthy Living and Dementia Online Event Series, hosted in partnership with the Alzheimer Knowledge Exchange (AKE). This 3-Part Series is designed for those interested in learning about healthy living and dementia. Each session offers a different, yet complimentary perspective on this topic including health promotion, self-management and how to live well with dementia. You may participate in 1 or all 3 sessions.

Event 02: Self-Management and Dementia
This event will provide an overview of concepts of self-management in chronic disease prevention and management, and discuss how concepts of self-management can be applied in the dementia context. Self-management, or learning the skills to continue to live healthy and well lives with a chronic condition, has typically been used in chronic conditions that are physical in nature, but not as frequently with dementia or mental health conditions. Self-management approaches for dementia care and research exploring the meanings and perceptions of self-management in the dementia context will be presented.

About Our Presenters

Elaine Wiersma, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences, Lakehead University. Her work has spanned community and long-term care sectors, using qualitative and participatory methodologies to examine the social dimensions of aging and dementia. Currently, her work is focusing on the development of self-management in dementia and exploring issues of aging and dementia in rural northern communities in Ontario. 

Lisa Loiselle is the Associate Director of Research for the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program at the University of Waterloo and has worked for the past nine years to engage persons with dementia in the work of the organization. Ms. Loiselle has worked on a variety of both research and education projects all with the same goal - working with NOT for persons with dementia.
