Caregiving and Decision Making
My brother and I were his caregivers for our father with dementia. He had sundowning and needed someone to be awake with him. My self care required that I sleep at my home several times a week which left my brother alone at night with my Dad. What is lacking for caregivers is someone to stay overnight with the person with dementia so family can rest. I hope for future family members caring for a loved one that what is required to care for them is spelled out at the time of decision making. Most of us are waking into and extremely intense situation with little knowledge of what we can expect so we can make an informed decision. I am a patient person and shudder at what disaster other families and especially the loved on with dementia may face. IT TAKES AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF PATIENCE AND INGINUITY TO BE THIS TYPE OF CAREGIVER AND IF THE CAREGIVER DOES NOT HAVE THESE QUALITIES IT CAN BE DEVASTATING FOR THE LOVED ONE AND FAMILY.
