Tool for tracking Sexual Behaviour
HI, I am a Challenging beahviour resource consultant for NS Health. I am looking for information re tracking tool for sexually inappropriate behaviours in LTC residents. WE are seeking a tool with fair to good pychometric properties and wondered if anyone is familiar with such a tool? Thanks, Lynda

RE:Tool for tracking Sexual Behaviour
Hi Lynda,

I know that a PRC colleague of mine has had great success with the Intimacy and Sexuality in Long-Term Care - A guide to practice: resource tools for assessment and documentation, Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Long-Term Care Working Group

There are additional appendices that are associated with this guide, which can also be found in the Intamancy and Sexuality section of the brainXchange's resource bank.

Of course, I also invite other brainXchange members to respond.

Take care,

Jillian

RE:Tool for tracking Sexual Behaviour
Hi Lynda,
I spoke with Valerie Powell, Behavioural Support Systems Coordinator for Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care about your question. She spoke to some of her contacts who had this to say:

I don't know of a specific tool for measuring or tracking sexual behaviour but the DOS could certainly be adapted to track any type of behaviour. If using it I would strongly suggest that the first few ratings or numbers remain so that calm behaviour is also recorded and levels of agitation - as they may be a good indication of any escalated behaviour , including sexual. If done every half hour or hour the DOS will also indicate whether there is a pattern of escalation or if there is a trigger. I would ask the staff to write any triggers or interventions in the margin or box - e.g. time of meds (some Parkinsons meds can increase sexual behaviour)    or visits by family or visits by other residents.

A bigger concern is the response by staff.  The for the area PRC [contact information here - http://brainxchange.ca/Public/Resource-Centre-Topics-A-to-Z/Psychogeriatric-Resource-Consultants.aspx] provide education on sexual behaviour with staff.

Also Lynda you may want to check our Resource Centre page on Intimacy & Sexuality http://brainxchange.ca/Public/Resource-Centre-Topics-A-to-Z/Intimacy-and-sexuality.aspx
