Presenter(s):

Corrina Cyr, Occupational Therapist, Providence Care’s Senior Mental Health

Corrina Cyr is an Occupational Therapist with Providence Care’s Senior Mental Health Behavioural Support Service (serving Lanark Leeds and Grenville). She has over 25 years’ experience working with the geriatric population, specializing in the care for individuals with dementia. Corrina has worked in long term care settings and in the community supporting individuals in their home and planning for transitions. During her training as a Geriatric Assessor she was introduced to the 5M’s and “What matters most” became a key mantra in her care provision.  She is passionate about education and knowledge to practice change and her role as a Dementiability trainer is a highlight of her career.

Corrina holds Bachelor degrees in Occupational Therapy (University of Ottawa) and Exercise Science (Concordia University).

Laura Lawless, RPN
After working as a PSW for several years, Laura, who identifies as she/her, returned to school to expand her scope and became a registered practical nurse in 2014. Upon graduation, she started working at Maplewood in Brighton. As a new nurse, Laura quickly realized there was a lot to learn about the long-term care sector. Becoming a sponge of information, Laura identified dementia care as being a priority in her nursing practice. Over the next several years she continued to learn through formal education, observation, feedback and lived experience.

At the end of 2023 Maplewood received funding for a BSO lead and Laura jumped at the opportunity. This position did not exist previously; there was no system in place and exactly 0 instructions. Starting with a team of 12 staff volunteers they grew the program in Maplewood to what it is today; a program that organically happens without the need for specific direction.

Laura maintains employment by doing the “deep- dives” into patient records, family consulting, collaborating with external services, suggesting and implementing interventions and entering supporting documentation- although her goal continues to be working herself out of a job.

Teresa Judd, Director, Placement Services, Central West; Director, Placement Services, Mississauga Halton, Ontario Health atHome
Teresa Judd joined the Ontario Health at Home previously known as the CCAC as a care coordinator in  2000 and moved through many different roles as an education lead for the launch of the RAI HC and RAI Palliative assessment tools. She managed the Intake Team during the Home Care transition of 2007 and managed placement services until the creation of the provincial BSO initiative.  In 2012, she became the regional director lead for the Central West Behaviour Support Network under the Behavioural Supports Ontario provincial model.  Her passion and support for older adults grew, as she held the chair position for the Central Regional Partners Aging and Developmental Disabilities Table.

Teresa has over 20 years of experience as a registered nurse and leader within the healthcare sector in the areas of acute care, long-term care, and community nursing. Her passion for supporting seniors and older adults has continued as the past provincial Co-chair for the Behaviour Supports Ontario Integrated Transition Team Collaborative. She was responsible for the co-development of “My Transitional Care Plan” tool on the BrainXchange website.   She continues to develop innovative solutions working with recreational therapy staff in long-term care homes and draws upon her many personal and professional experiences in supporting person-centered outcomes for patients and their families throughout the Central West and Mississauga Halton geographies. Currently she is the director for Placement Services, in the Mississauga Halton and Central West geography and continues to manage the BSO Community Nurses and Community Pharmacists and direct care programs. This has inspired her to continue to bring community partners together and work towards care transitions for patients and families in a variety of health settings.

Marie-Lise Vader, RN BScN GNC (C), RN, Mobile Response Team, South East Area
I have over 24 years of experience in the healthcare sector, having served in various roles including Personal Support Worker (PSW), Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), Registered Nurse (RN), and leadership positions within long-term care. My clinical background spans long-term care, acute care, and remote work in Indigenous communities. While I have found value in each of these roles, my true passion has always been in caring for older adults.

Currently, I am part of the Mobile Response Team in the South East region, where I collaborate closely with individuals, their support networks, and care homes to identify underlying causes of behavioral changes and develop effective, person-centered strategies. I am a certified Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) Coach and a PIECES Educator, and I take great pride in supporting teams to enhance their knowledge, build capacity, and improve outcomes for those in their care.
