Quality living expands beyond compliance. Quality implies that residents are thriving and functioning at their highest potential, staff feel confident and rewarded throughout each day and families feel welcome and part of the team. Quality dementia care requires an understanding of brain function, life story, environment, resident behaviour, the right to risk, and how one’s approach can enhance function, engagement, and overall well-being.

Through a DementiAbility lens, participants will be challenged to consider an important question: Are we creating environments that meet the needs of the people in our care - or are we creating environments that inadvertently contribute to the responsive behaviours we are trying to prevent?

Together, we will explore how thoughtful environmental design, knowledgeable and empowered staff, teamwork, meaningful engagement, and a deeper understanding of individual needs can help us move beyond simply managing risk and behaviour within the confines of rules and regulations (such as IPAC, fire and safety, and compliance).

Discover how to create a place called “home” that not only meets regulatory and safety requirements, but also supports enhanced function, meaning, purpose, connection, choice, belonging and joy while also combating excess disability (disability that arises due to disuse).

Compliance keeps people safe. Quality living is clearly much, much more.
