Presenter(s):

Amy Semaka, Pharmacist

Amy Semaka is a pharmacist working in and around the city of Edmonton. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and went on to complete another year of training in the University’s Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

The PharmD program exposed Amy to training in various settings including intensive care, hematologic oncology, family medicine and academia. She has continued to be actively involved as an alumnus of her faculty, and is currently part of a research team finalizing a scoping review on the roles of community pharmacists across the world.

Having previously worked in HIV, Amy now works in Edmonton’s inner city where she provides care for patients with drug addictions and is collaborating with various health care providers to develop a pharmacist-led hepatitis C program. At the pharmacy, she also conducts comprehensive assessments for patients interested in pursuing medical cannabis for numerous reasons, ranging from chemotherapy-induced nausea, to degenerative disc disease, to harm reduction.

When she is not at the pharmacy, Amy works for a family medicine clinic in Spruce Grove where she provides annual medication and health reviews for patients, assists with pain management and opioid use reviews, develops educational resources for her colleagues and provides general support for the physician team she works with.

Through her training and experience, Amy has provided care for many patients with multiple sclerosis and, as a member on the Board of Directors for the MS Society (Edmonton and Capital Region Chapter), she enjoys staying abreast of new research, developments and therapies in the ever-changing field of MS.
