This presentation will focus on the relationship between sleep, the environment and dementia. After a brief review of the science the presentation will discuss how practical changes to the bedroom environment can help facilitate a better night's sleep for both persons with dementia and their caregivers. The material in the presentation will be relevant to persons with dementia living in the community as well as those in long-term-care facilities.

Cary A. Brown, PhD, Professor, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta.

Cary practiced as an occupational therapist and department manager in Canada and Saudi Arabia and has held academic appointments in Canada and the UK.  She is currently a professor in the Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Alberta. These experiences underpin her research program of sleep deficiency, knowledge translation, and chronic pain. Cary regularly provides sleep education workshops to diverse groups and co-authored and co-edited the book An Occupational Therapist's Guide to Sleep and Sleep Problems.  She presents regularly at national and international conferences and received the Canadian Pain Society – Pain Awareness Award for her work in the area of knowledge translation.
