Summary:
Arts for Dementia aims to change this grim reality by offering positive and enjoyable solutions for life with dementia. We wish to promote empathy within the global community by empowering, inspiring and educating all circles of support about creativity in health care. We are looking for champions to bring arts based projects into local communities worldwide, disseminate knowledge about engaging activities and meaningful lifestyles with dementia. Arts for Dementia’s goal is to minimize the isolation of people living with the diagnosis of dementia, their families and their circles of care by catalyzing a paradigm shift that employs arts, creativity, humour and technological advancements to care better for our fellow humans and ourselves.
About Liza Futerman: Following my mom's diagnoses with Alzheimer's at the age of 58, I was motivated to understand how to better support and care for her, my dad and myself. I’m currently a CIHR-funded PhD Student at the University of Toronto, where I research the popular discourse around Alzheimer’s disease and the ways it affects policymakers, individuals who are diagnosed as ‘Alzheimer’s patients’ and families. I hold an MA in History of Art and Visual Culture from the University of Oxford, UK, and a BA and MA in Foreign Literatures and Linguistics from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. I’m a writer and an avid advocate for arts-based dementia care. www.ArtsForDementia.com was conceived at DementiaHack’15 in Toronto and will be starting its fundraising and community outreach campaign in September 2016.
