Learnings from the National Population Health Study of Neurological Conditions: Part V: The Epidemiology of Neurological Conditions
Dr. Nathalie Jette, Associate Professor in Neurology at the University of Calgary and a member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and of the Institute for Public Health and Dr. John Hirdes, Professor and Chair of the Ontario Home Care Research and Knowledge Exchange, School of Public Health and Health Systems, University of Waterloo discuss the epidemiology of neurological conditions and building the methodological foundation for surveillance.
Dr. Hirdes addresses the use of interRAI Instruments to respond to the needs of special populations, while Dr. Jette addresses how common neurological conditions are, what are the the best methods to identify persons with neurological conditions in Canada and how inventories of existing neurological registries are developed, focusing on registries that estimate how many people are affected by each condition (prevalence), or how many people develop these conditions over time (incidence).
The National Population Health Study of Neurological Conditions is a five-year study (2009-2014) that is expected to provide data on the scope, risk of onset and prognostic factors, health service utilization and the current and projected impact of neurological conditions over the next five, 10 and 20 years. In collaboration with Neurological Health Charities Canada (NHCC) and the Public Health Agency of Canada, this national Study is aimed at filling in gaps in knowledge about the state of neurological conditions in Canada. This multifaceted project consists of three national surveys, thirteen Pan Canadian peer-reviewed research studies and a micro-simulation project before concluding with a Synthesis Process.
