The Supportive Pathways program is a care philosophy that was developed by Client Service Managers in Carewest, Calgary Alberta. It was originally designed to enable front line care staff to care for persons with dementia. The philosophy has grown to encompass all those who provide care for elderly persons. For most people with dementia, there are behaviours that are predictable and can usually be accommodated by environmental and social measures and a common philosophy that follows the path of least resistance. There are times when some behaviours provide a challenge for caregivers, the client and their families.

This presentation focused on understanding those behaviours and provided strategies for supporting the client, their family and the staff during these challenging times.
