Dr. Melissa Andrew, staff geriatrician and Assistant Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, guides you through the new Canadian Consensus Conference on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Dementia (CCCDTD4) 2012 guidelines and how these guidelines impact assessment and management of risk, prevention strategies and the ongoing management of a dementia diagnosis.
This presentation addressed evidence for or against particular pharmacological therapies as well as lifestyle and dietary strategies in relation to prevention. Additionally, Dr. Andrew comments on the use of cholinesterase inhibitors, antidepressants and antipsychotics for symptomatic treatment and the effectiveness of combination therapies, in relation to the new guidelines. Behavioural difficulties and what types of support systems that may be utilized are also discussed.
