Dementia not only causes memory problems but it can create particular challenges around the use of medications.  Older adults, the majority of whom are women, take at least one medication and about one in three take five or more medications each day.  Use of several different drug therapies are often required to manage multiple chronic conditions.  Taking more than one medication increases the risk for drug related complications.

This presentation will review research and provide an overview of drug use by older women and how drug-related side effects can present.  We will also discuss challenges that older adults may encounter when taking medications and strategies that can be used to promote safe medication use.
